...photographische Ergüsse

...hier mal wieder ein Auszug aus einer meiner letzten "local" Emails, diesmal in English! Ja, genau - ruhig mal lesen, damit die Schule nicht ganz in Vergessenheit gerät, ne!

Thanx H.T. for the article and the pics!...and the x-mas present;-)

"I ought to be shot. The festival is called Thaipusam not Wesak. Wesak
is a Buddhist celebration.

Thaipusam
A day of consecration to the Hindu deity, Lord Murugan, sometimes also called Lord Subramaniam, Thaipusam is most elaborately celebrated at the Batu Caves outside Kuala Lumpur. A feature of the festival is the carrying of a kavadi, a frame decorated with colored papers, tinsels, fresh flowers and fruits as a form of penance. In Kuala Lumpur, Hindus carrying the kavadi make the annual pilgrimage to the Batu Caves in Selangor, where the kavadi is carried up the 272 steps to the entrance of the great
cave and deposited at the feet of the deity. On the eve of Thaipusam, the grounds of the Batu Caves are transformed into a fairyland of lights. Kavadi-carrying begins after sunset when devotees become entranced. These devotees that have entered a trance, pierce their cheeks, tongues, foreheads, backs and chests with all sorts of objects performing feats that seem superhuman. The next day they return to their ordinary lives, cleansed. Open-door observers of the kavadi do not have to participate in this ritual unless they really, really want to! Apart from the mortification of flesh, other forms of devotion are practiced such as honey or milk offerings for those with weaker stomachs! Yeah right! I need to be there! And I will...
Hopefully returning with stunning pics in my luggies...
